FLIP! Coach and Owner Halle McComb
Halle McComb, owner and coach of FLIP!, can claim a rich history in gymnastics. Since 1976, she has either been a competitive gymnast, coached gymnasts, or owned her own gymnastics company. This year, she was invited to coach onsite by the world-renowned gymnastics coaches Bela and Martha Karolyi in Texas, at their Olympic Training Site for the USA women's national team. As a young athlete in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, McComb competed for eleven years under an exceptionally skilled husband and wife coaching team at her local YMCA. Under the Hahns' direction, she came out at the top of state and regional placings, qualifying for nationals and earning a room full of awards along the way. The uneven bars were her specialty, becoming her signature event and earning her the gym name "Bar Hog." The loving nature of the Hahns' coaching transferred to McComb's own style. She sees her job as more than teaching a sport. She sees in every child an opportunity to shape young lives for the future, in whatever they decide to do. At FLIP!, gymnasts build confidence, set goals, celebrate their achievements. They show and receive respect, team support and positive self worth. These are the qualities McComb incorporates into her coaching, her program, and her life as wife and mother of two girls. In the early nineties, she went on to receive a BS in Early Childhood Education, while continuing to work with children and coaching gymnastics in local programs. In a second career spanning many years, she served special needs children through early intervention and vision therapy.
FLIP! Gymnastics, Inc. was developed by her in 2007 as a mobile gymnastics program, in the sure knowledge that FLIP! would succeed in Charleston just as her program, Kidnastics, succeeded in Asheville, NC. There, Halle and her husband, Neil, pioneered a small mobile gymnastics business in a traveling VW bus, packed with equipment, with two babies in hand. Within the first two years their program grew to serve 250 students in the Asheville area, at which time they decided a stationary gym would succeed, and her first gym, Kidnastics, became a reality. The McCombs were committed to making a great sport available to all. By offering free classes to schools and scholarships to individuals, they routinely supported schools and students who had no other means to experience the sport. In the small Appalachian town of Black Mountain, Halle built a successful gymnastics program with classes for kids and adults who came to reap the positive energy and recreational benefits of gymnastics. A business opportunity brought the McComb family back to Charleston where the couple had originally been married on the beach at high tide, living on the Isle of Palms for four years. To rejuvenate their once successful business established in the mountains, the McCombs created FLIP! For the past five years, FLIP! Gymnastics, under Halle's leadership, has touched young lives through the world of gymnastics in the following shools and events:
PLUS a brand new program through THE CITY OF CHARLESTON just launching this summer and continuing throughout the year,
In addition to our mobile program, and with the help of Hi-Dee Davis at East Cooper Gymnastics, McComb gathered a small and competitive team. The FLIP! team has entered the last four competitive seasons throughout South Carolina. The success of the team program has attracted young gymnasts to FLIP! with the interest and ability to take our uniquely positive approach a step up to the competition level, while maintaining a healthy and wholesome experience for all. Each girl has personal goals; gymnasts support one another in meeting those goals, creating a solid team spirit without undue pressure. We are proud of the FLIP! team's achievements as our program continues to serve the greater Charleston area through gymnastics for personal growth and positive fitness.
